Float Your Boat
If you believe that people who are passionate about their work are more successful, then you want to know that your new executive will be passionate about those areas of the role that are most critical to achieving success.
When interviewing, after discussing the mandate and key responsibilities of the role, ask the candidate which of those responsibilities they find most intriguing or exciting… because that is where they will naturally gravitate on a day-to-day basis. Simple human behaviour demonstrates that people will spend their time on what interests them the most, so your best clue to what the candidate will focus on in that role will be in their immediate, unprepared response to that question.
Look for the candidate whose natural interests lie in the area of focus you feel is most critical to the success of the role, and you will be leveraging their natural instincts instead of working against them. Then, whatever “floats their boat” will also float yours.
