The C.E.O. as a Recruiting Tool
One of the most important functions of a CEO is to promote the organization - not just to the media, investors, customers and the general public - but also to potential key employees. Many CEO's distance themselves from the hiring process because they don't want to step on the HR department's toes, or they feel it's outside the realm of their responsibilities. But what they don't realize is that they're missing a great opportunity to help in the recruitment process. I don't mean that the CEO should be involved in the strategic planning or interview process, but a simple guest appearance with finalists for key pivotal roles will demonstrate that the organization thinks they're valuable enough to matter to the CEO. This type of V.I.P. treatment can help close the deal with a candidate who's sitting on the fence or considering an offer from a competitor. People want to feel they're making an important contribution, and they want to be recognized for their efforts. Having the candidate meet with the CEO is a great way to reinforce the importance of the role and its perceived value to the organization.
