Exiting Successfully
Moving on to a new role is an exciting prospect, and one that requires a great deal of preparation and attention. Most executives are careful to finish up outstanding tasks and transfer their responsibilities to their successor or interim executive, but as the leader, even a subtle “gearing down” before leaving can impact the performance of the larger team.
It’s important to keep your team focused on productivity once you’ve made the decision to move on, to ensure a seamless transition and maintain a good relationship with your ex-employer. A carefully planned and executed exit strategy should include not only a transition plan that deals with responsibilities, line of command and decision making, but also a communication plan to address any concerns or issues your departure may cause in relation to employees, suppliers and clients.
True leadership is a character trait, and good leaders care about the success of their team from start to finish.
